How a calculator gets built
Each tool starts from a documented valuation method already in common use, either the multiplier method or the per-diem method for non-economic damages, or a straightforward addition of economic damages with a comparative-negligence adjustment where relevant. Chris checks the arithmetic and the assumptions behind each default value before a calculator publishes, and again whenever a calculator's inputs or defaults change.
How the reference dataset is sourced
The severity-multiplier bands and per-diem conventions in the 2026 value factors reference are this site's own calculator constants, presented as conventions rather than statistics. The comparative and contributory negligence table on that page is compiled from Justia's 50-state negligence survey, with an access date noted on the page itself, and re-checked whenever we have reason to think a state's rule has changed.
How the articles get written
Priya Raman writes the guides on how settlements are calculated, how negotiation unfolds, and related topics, working from published descriptions of the process (demand letters, adjuster review, comparative-negligence rules) rather than from any single case. Specific numbers used as examples are illustrative, not claims about any particular claimant's outcome.
Corrections
If a calculator's math, a stated figure, or a claim in an article turns out to be wrong or out of date, we fix it. Tell us what you found and we'll look into it directly; most corrections get made within a few days of being reported.
